Sustainable Practices
Responding to the connection between environment and health
As a health care company, we know taking care of people requires taking care of the planet. We continuously evaluate our use of energy and resources and take steps to minimize our impact on the environment.
-
Optimizing Our Resources
Focusing on efficiency first, we reduce consumption to ease the strain on the grid and energy generation. Electric power we consume is 100% matched with the retirement of Green-e Certified Renewable Energy Certificates.
-
Building Design
We’re subscribed to WELL at scale, applying the International WELL Building Institute’s health and well-being strategies across our entire building portfolio. Our headquarters buildings have earned the WELL Health-Safety rating since 2022 and are LEED-certified in Illinois, Montana, New Mexico and Texas.
-
Recycling and Waste Reduction
We limit paper consumption, recycle paper and electronics and compost organics from our employee cafes. In 2025 we were recognized for saving more than 5 million plastic bottles with the installation of water dispensers.
-
Supporting Biodiversity
Our urban beekeeping program supports native pollinator populations with native bee homes and honeybee hives. In 2025 we received our first biomonitoring reports, providing insights on nature-related impacts and opportunities around our offices.
-
Transparency Initiatives
We participate in CDP to measure our environmental impact and support sustainable supply chain practices. In 2025, we earned a B rating from CDP recognizing we’re actively managing environmental impacts with policies, targets and actions. We encourage engagement and collaboration with initiatives led and supported by employee volunteers.

Sustainable Investments
Supporting community carbon reduction
We subscribed to three new community solar projects in northwest and central Illinois in 2025 that will generate 16.5-megawatts of electricity to support Illinois communities.
Also in 2025, we signed a three-year agreement to procure 15,000 metric tons of American Carbon Registry certified carbon credits to offset our emissions while preserving forests.
