Sustainable Practices
Responding to the connection between environment and health
As a health care company, we know taking care of people requires taking care of the planet. We actively reduce our negative impact on the environment and pursue ways to make a healthier world for our members and communities.
-
Optimizing Our Resources
We offset 100% of our electric power-related emissions with the purchase of Green-e certified Renewable Energy Certificates and reduce electric power consumption with energy efficiency projects. In 2024 we subscribed to a 4.5 megawatt solar generation project in central Illinois, supporting access to clean energy in our communities.
-
Building Design
We’re subscribed to WELL at scale, applying the International WELL Building Institute’s health and well-being strategies across our entire building portfolio. Our headquarters buildings have earned WELL Health-Safety Rating annually since 2022. Our Texas and Montana headquarters are LEED certified.
-
Recycling and Waste Reduction
We reduce our impact by limiting paper consumption, recycling paper and electronics and composting organics from employee cafes.
-
Supporting Biodiversity
In 2024 we evolved our urban beekeeping program to support native bee populations with native bee homes and a biomonitoring program, providing visibility to 20,000 species of native pollinators in the U.S. and the ecosystems they help keep healthy.
-
Transparency and Engagement
We participate in CDP and other disclosure programs to measure our environmental impacts, support sustainable supply chain practices and better understand where we can expand our efforts. We encourage collaboration with engagement initiatives led and supported by nearly 100 employee volunteers across 20 offices.
